Resting on the Ranch Day…
So by now you learned we like to rhyme, and that is the game we played when we drove anywhere it was easy and would help my son remember words. As we had a real struggle with learning in the lower grades until he was tested and found to have executive dysfunction disorder which means his brain processes things different, you and I might learn that 2+2 is 4 and then be able to recall that 3 or 4 months down the road when we needed it again, Cole on the other hand needs to have things repeated for several years in order to recall it, we don’t know if this was a side effect of his chemo or from where the doctor removed his last part of the tumor. What ever it is the first few years of school were a bit rough, we still have issues but now the teachers and classmates help him more and over the years he has retained more too. But this made up place where we stuck in our real farm animals was a place that Cole and I could create in our minds. So come with us on an adventure or two, and meet all our flat friends at the Polka Dot Ranch.
So deep in the north woods of Minnesota lies the Polka Dot Ranch, it spreads out over vast prairies and forest as it is 50,000 acres. (that is close to 79 miles square) there is a stream with a small pond and waterfall, we have cliffs and rocks and a beautiful sand beach by the lake, owners home and 2 big barns, and several small out buildings, plus 2 bunk houses for the hired hands and friends that come to visit. The owners of the Ranch are Professor Hugu and Violet Buttercup. Of course many folks think his name is spelled wrong but his mama knew best, that his name was precious, as it is pronounced (HUGYOU) He and his lovely bride farm steaded this ranch back when most of us were just a thought in our parents mind. They have raised 6 kids and crops galore. So come with us as we share the antics and sometimes wonderful adventures on the Polka Dot Ranch with all their flat friends.
So today is cold and blowing
Forecast says it should be snowing
I have seen this before
this past spring, nor
will I forget how cold and wet
it was when it first met
my little nose
I shivered all the way to my toes
or my hoofs as you say
I really think winter is on its way
its so cold and blustery today
so now I will think of May
and the pretty flowers that come
from farmers with a green thumb
so for now I will hunker down
in my pen and not give a frown
for spring will come again soon
here is hoping I won’t wait until June.
I have other friends
so my heart will mend
I miss the ranch were I was born
but here they raise some corn
So now my life is here
with many new friends near
my friends are kittens, horses and a turkey
he walks kinda quirky
his head bobs up and down
and he struts and pecks the ground
he makes me laugh
and me just a little calf
then there is the beagle
she sometimes thinks she is an eagle
she follows the bunnies in the yard
and in the house i heard there was a lizard
i feel warm and cozy
and my new life is quite rosy
for now i am off to bed
to rest this little head.
more tales to tell another time
so for now i will end this rhyme.
So today Skullerina is in her pen
And her human friend comes in
He feeds her grain
And speaks of rain
What is that she thinks
maybe something cool to drink
her human boy says here’s a treat
something little with four little feet
its fluffy and soft
they will probably hide in the hayloft
they hunt and prowl
and sometime growl
but mostly they purrrr
when you pet their fur
who is my human showing me
why its kittens and they are cute as can be
Marble the Magnificent and Garfield the Great
are here to catch mice they really can’t wait
no more holes in the feed sacks
now the cats have our backs
So now I have two new friends
my fun here will never end.
The ranch can be interesting day to day.
Sometimes we never know what will come our way.
From animals to trees and everything in between.
Some things can even make you scream.
Nothing really scary or downright mean.
That is not what we want in this scene.
Because today is the big day
The day Skullerina came to stay.
She may be small
And not real tall
She loves to eat grain and hay
She even likes to run and play
Someday she will grow and get big
But now she wants to befriend a pig
Skullerina may be little now
But soon she will be a big cow.
We want to connect with friends around the world with one goal in common, having fun! We started these tales just about 8 years ago and it was just between my son and I. It was a way for us to have fun while making his mind grow but now we want to share them with you.
